Composable architecture without the chaos
How we decide when to split a modular monolith — and when not to — for products still finding product-market fit.
Teams reach for microservices too early because the diagram looks mature. We start with a modular monolith, explicit module boundaries, and observability that would still work if we split tomorrow.
The rule we use with founders: split a module when two teams are blocked on the same deploy, or when scale characteristics genuinely diverge. Until then, keep the cognitive load low.
On a recent healthcare engagement, this kept a 12-person team shipping weekly while still passing a security review that assumed distributed systems.
